The Tetractys is the triangular arrangement of ten points — one at the apex, two below, three below that, four at the base — that the Pythagoreans considered the key to all of reality. It is the sum of the first four numbers: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10, the number of completion, the number that contains all others and returns to unity.
Each row carries its own meaning. The single point at the apex is the Monad — the undivided source, the One from which all things proceed. The two points are the Dyad — the first division, the emergence of polarity, the line. The three points are the Triad — the first stable relationship, the plane, the synthesis of opposites. The four points at the base are the Tetrad — the solid, the physical world, the four elements, the four directions, the world made manifest.
The Pythagoreans swore their most sacred oaths not on the gods but on the Tetractys. "By him who gave our soul the Tetractys, which hath the fountain and root of ever-flowing nature." To swear by the Tetractys was to swear by the structure of reality itself.
